The plane, with 231 passengers and 10 crew members aboard, was forced to return to Denver Airport in Colorado. No one injured was reported.
In response to the incident, Japan asked all airlines using Boeing 777 with the same Pratt & whitney 4000 engine to avoid its airspace.
Boeing said he supports Japan's decision and recommended suspending operations of all 777 aircraft on the same engine.
The manufacturer said 69 Boeing 777 aircraft on this engine are currently in service worldwide.
According to the US Federal Aviation Administration, United is the only American airline that flies on such planes.
The agency ordered additional inspections of Boeing 777 aircraft, equipped with the Pratt & whitney 4000 engine, following the Denver incident.
