The power of the diaspora vote has increased greatly. From the 2017 election process, where the diaspora voted through the mail and no 6 thousand votes were calculated, our exile is already decomposing to elect the country's lawmakers.
According to the Social Democrat Initiative candidate coming from the Mrgata, Bekim Brestovci, these elections are a historic moment for the diaspora and its empowerment in decision making. However, according to him, the power of the diaspora would increase even if a easier voting process were possible. In this direction, each member that has applied to vote has gone through charged and ridiculous procedures, only to be part of such a process.
So for Brestovcin, the voting forms from the diaspora must be different and not only an opportunity for a voter body of about half a million citizens rightly vote.
“Pos voting with physical participation in ballot boxes coming from the diaspora, and voting by mail, we will demand that diaspora be allowed in other forms of voting, such as voting through diplomatic and consular missions”, Brestovci said.
Reasoning his call about voting through diplomatic and consular points, Social Democrat Initiative candidate number 11 for the February 14th elections, says “This would save time and money since voters from the diaspora would not need to come to Kosovo”.
“Vos will be counted there, under the observation of a representative from the CEC, or will be sent with a single and secure envelope to Kosovo. The selection of an embassy/consulate for a specific region that would include several states would help a large number of voters from the diaspora travel a short distance to vote”, Brestovci says.
It also cites electronic voting as a quick and efficient form, yet it warns of the possibility of vote manipulation.
The possibility of manipulation of the results from possible intervention is quite high. Preparing a system from zero that would protect voter information and transmit data is complicated. Also, a legal framework is needed for setting the criteria for identifying voters who would use electronic voting”, Brestovci says.
One of the lowest cost forms, according to Brestovci, is the method that would allow voters from the diaspora to authorise someone in Kosovo to vote instead.
For each of you in the diaspora to vote more easily, and through your vote to penetrate the central decision-making institutions, and therefore to hear your voice, then ask for your vote. So, you vote on the Social Democrat Initiative that within its list there are five candidates from the diaspora, and you vote at me number 11”, Brestovci called.
