The news has made it known sources from the White House quoted by the agency “Reuters”.
Officials involved in domestic talks are considering receiving an executive order intended to be signed by President Joe Biden in the coming weeks or months.
The news thus signals a new attempt to close what human rights lawyers have described as a stain on the global image of the United States.
“We have launched a discussion process to address an issue inherited from the previous administration, in line with our major intention to shut down Guantanamon”, National Security Council spokeswoman Emily Horne said.
But despite the initiative, it is unlikely that the notorious high-security complex will close its doors in the near future.
Established to accommodate terror suspects following the September 11th attacks, Guantanamos prison turned into a symbol of overcoming American war limits against terrorism, as methods of questioning prisoners were soon turned into torture.
