Porfirije, 59-year-old, “is believed to have a slightly softer attitude towards Kosovo independence than his predecessor and the rest of the top clergy of the Serbian church”, writes the Associated Press news agency.
According to the AP, the new patriarch of the Serbian church, Porfirije, is known as a man close to Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq.
“The arrival of an ally at the head of the church will be important for Vucicin if he tries to negotiate with the Kosovo Albanian majority establishing future relations between Serbia and Kosovo”.
“Support from the Serbian Church, which in Kosovo is located in historic headquarters, is considered to be key to any” agreement, the AP writes.
The Serbian Church has consistently opposed Kosovo's independence, while the AP commemorates that it played a key role even in Montenegro's elections, where pro-Serbian parties defeated Milo Djukanovic's pro-Western powers last summer.
