The 78-vote vote for and 20 against it reflected both Democratic Party and Republican support for it.
It will take on the role of ambassador to the United Nations at a time when the nations of the world must deepen their co-operation in the fight against [striking] COVID-19 and in the fight against climate change”, said the majority leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer.
Thomas-Grenfield has spent decades in foreign service, including various positions in Liberia, Switzerland and Pakistan.
It has also spent several years as senior United States diplomat for Africa and has held a senior position in the State Department's Population, Refugees and Migration Office.
Thomas-Grenfield is expected to start working before the United States takes over the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council in March.
The confirmation of Thomas-Grenfield is seen as fulfilling a pledge by the new American president, Joe Biden, to elect a more diverse cabinet.
