Snow dawned all over Albania this weekend, saving the lower and coastal areas.
This atmospheric event did not make exception to the capital, where snow hair appeared on Saturday afternoon for several minutes, creating the impression that it would only be a greeting to the capitalians but no, the evening returned snow to Tirana.
The clouds have continued overnight until the early hours of Sunday, stretching by 4 to 10 inches, even in the center of town. A very rare phenomenon for Tirana after the '90s, even though snow has repeatedly visited the capital for a few minutes, or with layers of two or three inches [2-3 cm]. A several-hour snow event and such a visible white layer has not been observed in Tirana in the past three decades.
Also, coastal areas, especially the Adriatic coasts, were whitened by snowfall accompanied by a strong, very cold northeast wind mainly on the banks of Velipoja and the beaches of Lezha, where the Drin Valley has helped strengthen the wind to 75km perh. Snow did not forget the coasts of Joni, where the early Sunday hours whitened the southern coast, though to a lesser extent compared to the northwestern and central areas.
Beyond the surprise and satisfaction the snow caused in the western urban areas, snowfall deepened by over half a meter, snowfall in most mountain areas. Concretically, the northeast has registered up to 30 inches [50 cm] of snow, while snowfalls during this weekend have spread from 30 to 70 cm] of snow in southeastern mountainous areas.
Such an atmospheric event is not uncommon for the Albanian mountain climate, where snow is a common winter phenomenon but has become rarer over the past two decades. The incident is unusual in the very low temperatures recorded during this weekend, where the thermometer has dropped to -14 °C in rural residential areas while marking several degrees below in remote areas in the northeast of the country.
It is predicted that thermal values will change slowly until Thursday, even by the end of February, night and morning temperatures for most mountain areas will remain in negative value by preserving a considerable layer of snow until the entrance of spring. / A2 CNN
