Tensions mount: Russia Increases Military Troops Near Ukraine

Satellite images recorded by an American private company show that Russia has continued in recent weeks to increase its military presence in Crime, which it annexed in 2014 as well as near Ukraine. This development comes as Moscow continues to increase pressure on the United States for talks about those it [...] has.

Russia wants NATO to halt its eastward expansion and guarantees that the Western military alliance will not deploy offensive military equipment to Ukraine or other neighbouring countries.

The news agencyReuters has not been able to independently verify the latest images provided by the United States-based company Maxar Technology. The Kremlin reiterated Friday that it enjoys the right to move its forces into Russian territory, as it does, and accused Western countries of developing provocative military maneuvers near Russian borders.

Washington, Brussels and Kiev have charged Russia that since October it has continued to delock a large number of troops near the Ukrainian border, following an increase in the presence of military troops for a short time in April, for which the company HINAMaxarı also published satellite images. President Joe Biden and other world leaders say Moscow appears to be planning the possibility of an attack on Ukraine in the next month, something Russia has consistently rejected.

Images released Thursday evening showed a crime base, filled with hundreds of armoured vehicles and tanks since December 13th. A satellite image: Makar Technology, of the same base registered in October, indicated that it was half empty.

Asked Friday about the increase in the presence of Russian troops near Ukraine, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was acting to ensure its safety.

President Biden has also threatened with strong economic measures if Russia attacks Ukraine. According to an American official, new sanctions may include severe export controls. / VOA
