He was planning to challenge Mr. Lukashenko in the 2020 presidential election but was imprisoned before the vote was held, reports the BBC, translating Periscopi into Albanian.
His wife, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, ran in front of Lucasenkos, in elections that were seen as disreputed.
She had later claimed to have won on her own in August last year, but fearing for her safety, she was forced to flee to the island with her child the following day.
