The new daily cases have doubled in the past two weeks. The previous record was in January this year with 250,000 cases per day.
The number of Americans hospitalised is about 60 thousand, or half the January figures. The hospital situation can be a reflection of the effects of vaccines, as well as the possibility that Omitron is not accompanied by severe symptoms.
Death cases have increased over the past two weeks, from 1200, to 1500 a day.
The data shows that hospital stays are more numerous among the unexplored. Hospital stays are not expected to reach high levels of the past, says Amesh Adal, public health expert at Johns Hopkins University.
Vaccines and other treatments have helped reduce the number of infections and minimize serious cases. It will take time to get used to the fact that the number of cases today no longer has that meaning as in the past”, says Mr. Adal.
The same situation is being observed in Europe. Several countries, such as France, Greece, Britain and Spain, have marked record levels of infectones this week.
