The building of Australia's former parliament in the capital, Canberra, was burned Thursday by protesters during a demonstration of the Australian sovereignty, police said.
No one was hurt by the fire, which included the doors of the old parliament's entrance before it was extinguished.
The move came after two weeks of protests in the country. Violence at protests on this scale is rare in Australia, but the outbursts of anger have become more common during pandemic.
Some of the protesters had identified themselves as part of anti-government groups and “sovereign citizens”, observers said.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has condemned the violence, saying this is not the way Australia works.

Workers inside the building, which is the object of cultural heritage, were evacuated soon after the fire broke out.
