A 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit the ground, just 10km below the surface Sunday, according to the US Geological Service (USGS).
However, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said the earthquake was 5.4 magnituded.
Data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre shows that the Aegean Sea island was also hit by smaller quakes with magnitude 3 on the Richter scale at 6:00.
According to local news pages, so far no reports of hurt or material damage, Mirror writes.
But shallow earthquakes are understood to feel much stronger as they are closer to the earth's surface.
The island was rocked by another massive earthquake just a few months ago, in October, when a powerful quake of 6.3 hit Crete's southern coast.
Authorities at the time said the waves felt up to Turkey and Cyprus.
