The airlines have warned of a cloud of ash rising up to 15,000m.
The blast occurred about 14:300 local times. Local authorities have created a limited area within five kilometers of the crater.
Thoricul Haq, a local official, told Reuters that a road and bridge from the area to the nearby town of Malang had been cut off.
