Osmani: Women killed by men should be among us making plans for New Year's Eve

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani has mentioned the case of Marigona Osmani and other raped women during her annual speech in the Assembly.

Osmani said she and other women should be among us making plans for the New Year's Eve, but as the president stressed, failure to protect them is one of the biggest failures in our society.

It is painful that some have their dreams cut in half and some have their wings cut in flight. Kosovo became the victim of gender-based violence pandemic. In 2021, gender cases have increased dramatically, while murders and cruel acts against women have continued. There are many lost lives that are victims of violence not only from their partners, but are victims of our shortcomings as a society to raise the level of individual and collective consciousness to the point where everyone has a clear say that every life has equal weight”.

Among other things, Osmani said commitment is needed to increase minimum penalties against violators.

“Nivel of the current sentences must be increased by equivalenting them to acts of terror. What happened to Marigona Osmani and many other women is nothing less than that because they experienced terror more than once. They today should be among their loved ones making plans for the new year, failure to protect them is one of the biggest failures in our society”.

“in our judicial system when and girls are blamed for violence against them, such language is unacceptable to our society but, above all, for people working in our justice system. Let them read these decisions to all those who still have doubts about Vetting's necessity in the justice system as the precondition for increasing integrity”, Osmani has said.
