The US, Great Britain, Canada and Australia have said they will not send government representatives to the February Games, due to concerns about charges against China of abuse against the Christians and other minorities.
At an extended press conference Thursday, the French president said the Olympic Games should not be politicised and that he preferred actions that had a useful “effect.
“To be clear: either you have a full boycott and you don't send sportsmen, or you try to change things with useful actions”, he said.
The president added that France would work with the International Olympic Committee for a statute to protect athletes, in a secret reference to hostage Shuai, the BBC writes.

China stated that countries boycotting the “Games will pay the price for their wrong actions”.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary - General Antonio Guterres said that he had accepted an invitation to attend the opening of the games.
