Authorities have ordered citizens not to show any signs of happiness, while North Korea commemorates its death.
“We should not consume alcohol, laugh or have fun during these days”, said a Korean from Sinuiyu's northeastern border town of Radio Free Asia (RSA).
He stressed that people were not even allowed to buy food items on December 17th of last year for the same reason.
The mourning period, held annually for Kim Jong Il, will last 10 days, this year will be 11 days to mark the 10th anniversary of his death.
Kim Jong II ruled North Korea from 1994 to its death in 2011, and power was then followed by his third son, the country's current leader Kim Jong Un.
