According to the DPA, the National Security Council announced on Monday evening that there will be talks with Russia on January 10th, within a strategic security dialogue.
Both sides will be able to raise their concerns at the meeting, Washington said.
According to the White House, separate talks are planning to hold Russia and NATO on January 12th.
NATO officials had already said the date was under consideration for a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council, the first in two and a half years. Also according to the American administration, on January 13th there will be a meeting of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSBE) permanent council.
What is already known is that Russia wants to stop NATO's eastward expansion and prevent Ukraine's membership, which it sees as a threat, while Washington said no decisions on Allies, including Ukraine, will be made in its talks with Moscow.
For weeks the West has been concerned about reports that Russia has gathered tens of thousands of soldiers in areas not far from Ukraine.
Several parts of Ukraine are involved in a conflict between government forces and pro-Russian separatists. The Defence Ministry in Moscow announced on Saturday that more than 10,000 soldiers will return to their bases after taking part in a military maneuver. However, he did not find out how many of them had been on the Ukrainian border.
