A clear and uniform period of acceptance for the vaccine certificates will ensure travel measures continue to be co-ordinated, as requested by the European Council after the last meeting on 16 December,” he added.
The new regulations will ensure that restrictions are based on available scientific evidence. ”
Continued co-ordination is essential to the functioning of the single market and will give citizens clarity in exercising their right to free movement”, the European Commission explains.
The EU's “Certificate Digital Covid is a success story in the EU and continues to facilitate the safe travel for citizens throughout the European Union during the pandemic. 807 million digital certificates have been issued to the EU so far. The EU's Computer Digital Certificate has set a global standard. To date, 60 countries and territories on five continents have joined the system. New regulations for travel within the Union harmonise different rules among member states”, he added.
“This period of validity takes into account the indicators of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, which recommends reinforcement doses not later than six months after the end of the first vaccination course. The certificate will remain valid for a period of another three months beyond six months to ensure that national vaccination campaigns can be adjusted and citizens have access to strengthening dose”, the EU executive emphasises. /A2 CNN
