The European Union for Public Health Agency (ECDC) reported today that the Omitron version of the Coronavirus, within a few months, could be responsible for more than half of all COVID-19 infections in Europe.
“Based on mathematical modeling conducted by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), there are indicators that omitron can cause more than half of all SARS-CoV-2 infections in the EU / EEA in the coming months”, ECDC said, Reuters reports.
So far there is no convincing evidence of Omitron transmission, but the chairman of the World Health Organisation for COVID-19, Maria van Kerkovo, claims the data is expected within days.
Europe has so far recorded dozens of Omitron infections, which was first discovered in South Africa last month. Earlier today, French government leading scientific adviser Jean-Francois Delfres said Omitron could take over the delta by the end of January.
