European Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhely said opening four chapters with the EU presents a strong political signal of the European Union's commitment to Serbia's accession to the bloc and that rule of law and normalisation of relations with Kosovo remain key to the membership process.
Speaking at a press conference following Serbia's Intergovernmental Conference - The EU, the Eurocommissioner said negotiations for a group -- composed of four chapters -- are opening for the first time. Thus, as he added, Serbia is taking another important step towards EU membership.
Even the state secretary in Slovenia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gasper Dovzan, whose country is in charge of the European Union presidency, shares the same opinion with Varhely on the issue of normalising Serbia's reports with Kosovo and its path towards European integration.
The simultaneously opening of four chapters brings additional dynamism to Serbia's membership negotiations in the European Union”.
Chapters 14 (Trans-European Policy), 15 (Energy), 21 (trans-European networks) and 27 (medical) are opened today within group 4, which refers to the Green Aegean and the sustainable connection.
