Donfried made these comments during a telephone conversation with the prime minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti.
Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Donfried thanked Prime Minister Kurti for the housing of Afghan refugees by cerras Kosovo has demonstrated that she is a reliable partner of the United States of America.
Prime Minister Kurti said it was a humanitarian issue that the people of Kosovo know well, and that Kosovo and its people are always ready to respond to the call for help from the United States of America, which he considers allies and strategic partners.
“Expressing and offering US support for strengthening democracy and Euro-Atlantic integration for Kosovo, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Donfried thanked Kosovo for participating in the Democracy Summit. While Prime Minister Kurti thanked him for inviting Kosovo to be part of this summit and said he is welcomed and encouraged by the fact that President Biden has declared crime and corruption a national security threat to the US, but also to democracy worldwide. Furthermore, during the conversation, he said Kosovo has noted economic progress this year with an increase of 9.9%, then a 60% increase in exports, 30% increase in budget revenues and 53% in foreign investments, and has also increased rule of law throughout the territory”, the Government Community says.
Regarding talks between Kosovo and Serbia, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Donfried said it is important to meet leaders, that there must be an agenda on topics, always in the function of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of independent Kosovo.
Prime Minister Kurti, on the other hand, stressed that he has always been active and constructive in the dialogue and has not rejected an invitation to the meeting and made concrete proposals for solutions. He said it is important to have an agenda for 2022 and that the agreement should have mutual recognition centred with citizens as final beneficiaries.
In closing the conversation, the two exchanged congratulations messages for 2022.
