On International Human Rights Day, civil society organisations with placards with inscriptions “Sexlici”, “nothing more”, “ma” marched from the square towards the police object, prosecutor of the Judiciary Council. And therein are placed the banners.
So they're looking for justice for murdered, raped, harassed and justice for 11-year-old Cameron Wessel who was raped and then killed. State institutions are being required to meet the demands of disabled people. Also, the Government of Kosovo is being asked to take urgent measures to provide a secure LGBTI society
Protesters also cheered that, “Sexual abuse is crime”, “Body I'm right”, ”Transferat are women”, “whether it's transfobia”, “who protects us from police? <x09>, “who protects us from prosecution”, “SDJyste”, <x>
Valmira Rasiti from the Kosovo Women's Network has asked competent institutions to monitor, sanction or even dismiss judges and prosecutors, who are factors in neglect of systematic violence against women.
Today we demand from the government that gender-based violence be treated as national emergency, that the judges be monitored, sanctioned or dismissed, prosecutors officers who are guilty of neglect of the systematic violence subject to women. Do not release violators with regular procedure and not reconsider sentences when their crimes contain all the critical circumstances, but be adequately punished with Kosovo's penal code. It's time to institutionalize the protection of women's lives and seek institutional accounts for them. Justice and security for women”, she said.
Fatmir Macshe says that the case of the rape and murder of 11-year-old Cameron Wessel in 2019 is a failure of all courts of justice in Kosovo.
The last two cases in Prizren and Gjakova once again disfigure the racist mentality in our society that is unfortunately maintained by state institutions. The case of Cameron Wessel, 11-year-old Ashkali child raped and killed in 2019 is an example of the failure of all courts of justice in Kosovo [] We call on all state acts to deal more seriously with the flagrant violations of the rights of non- majority communities in Kosovo and react on time. Justice for Cameron Veselin”, he said
The protest also required that rights of disabled people be met. Gentiana Hasani from Handikos said that even after so many years they are facing basic challenges.
Today we demand that rights and requirements of disabled persons be met. Unfortunately, after so many years we still face basic challenges, such as access to public and private environments, access and barriers to education, employment, and services. So today we are calling to say no discrimination”, Hasani said.
Nol Musa from the YIHR said the government should take urgent measures to provide a secure society for LGBTI persons.
Kosovo's “Government must take urgent measures to provide a secure society for LGBTI persons. Since the establishment of the Kurti government there is no concrete plan for LGBTI and these communities continue to be one of the most endangered and discriminated against by Kosovo society...] all persons, lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgians, non-reformals are taxpayers to this state and rights are guaranteed by law and constitution. The state should focus on preventing disasters, rather than taking measures before these happen”, he stressed.
