WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebraesus, among other things, says he remains in hope that the year 2022 will be the year in which the world leaves pandemic.
He also accused the richer countries of worsening pandemics, arguing that their <x0 population, narrow nationalism and the collection of health resources” had undermined equality and produced ideal “ <x2x3> for displaying new strains of the virus.
“While science was successful, politics very often triumphed over solidarity,” he said.
There were 1.8 million recorded deaths in 2020, while 2021 has 3.5 million. And we know that the actual number is much higher”, he said.
But Tedros said he remained optimistic that 2022 could “put an end to the acute phase of pandemic”.
Noting that 92 out of 194 nations worldwide had lost a goal of vaccinating 40 per cent of their population, while urging governments and civil society to join a new campaign to reach 70 per cent of global coverage by mid-2022.
I'm asking everyone to make a New Year's decision to follow the campaign to vaccinate 70% by mid-2022. And the clock starts now”, Tedros said.
