Nealia Biden and her daughter, Naomi, were killed shortly after Delaware's voters elected Biden in the Senate in 1972. Their car was sealed while they were on their way to get a Christmas tree. Beau and Hunter Biden, four and three years old, survived the accident.
The accident became a defining moment that shaped Joe Biden's personality and political career through 35 years in the Senate, eight years as Barack Obama's vice president, and now about a year as president himself.
Tragedy has been a Biden-era teststone at the White House. The president recently opened a speech in Minnesota, noting how two of that former state senators helped him cope with his deaths, writes Guardian.
Beden married again and had a daughter, Ashley, with Jill Biden, who is now the first lady. Both joined him in church on Saturday, as did Hunter and his family and others.
