Prime Minister Edi Rama during his meeting address for the Open Balkans initiative also introduced Oliver Varhely, the EU Enlargement Commissioner.
The head of the Albanian government, failing to save batats for connecting via the online platform with the commissioner, asked the latter for a confirmation of the Open Balkans whether or not there is EU support.
When we started you were frozen, now you're melted. You're not just following us, but from television screens. They want to know that; Does the EU Support the Open Balkans? That would be daily news.”, Rama said.
In his speech, Olivér Várhely's commissioner supported the Open Balkans initiative by inviting the region's three other countries to join. From the Tirana Summit where it was part online, Brussels' top official urged Albania, Serbia and Macedonia to move forward by removing bureaucracy among the countries.
I am from Hungary and this gives me a closer level of understanding how we can help the Balkans. To be honest I've been positive about this proposal. You continue to promote this initiative because the region requires that it be a whole of what the economy and society are. The region wants to be together, as if we are in the EU. I also admire how much you feel about this initiative. It has been an initiative coming from the Balkans. It's not the EU that came up with this initiative, but it came from you, the three actors I see around the table, and you kept pushing forward even when we didn't manage to attract the participation of all partners, because you understood the importance of the regional market and how you could accelerate economic integration. We think this is the best message that the region can convey that it is not only ready for regional co-operation, but it is. You can include me as supporters of the Open Balkans. Invited three other partners to return this regional co-operation”, he said.
