“Open Balkan” in Tirana, three initiative countries invite three others who refuse

Through a letter published in the Montenegrin newspaper “Dan”, Prime Minister Edi Rama, Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq and northern Macedonia Prime Minister Zoran Zaev invited Kosovo, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina to become part of the Balkan Open, which consider it a vision to overcome social, economic and trade barriers that slow economic growth [...]

We use this opportunity and we once again invite all our neighbors to unite to offer their citizens the benefits we offer our citizens. Through freedom of movement of people, goods, capitals and services, our co-operation can foster trade and economic growth to make life easier for each of us. Often charged as Europe's “powder code”, we as responsible leaders cannot allow our region to return to the nightmares of the past, while the EU is unable to do more for enlargement at this stage, which is”.

Following the letter are more closely highlighted doses of doubt on the EU's will to see the Western Balkans part of it a near future.

Europe is not just a continent, it is a vision. For a long time, however, citizens of the Western Balkans as integral parts of the continent and this vision have been left out. Our people's desire to become part of the EU family has been repeatedly ignored because of the internal policy of member states, the lack of realisation of promises made, as well as fear of the future. This has brought disappointment, instability, migration, and lack of large investment. As leaders of our countries, we may decide to sit and complain or act. We chose this last”.

We do not agree on political issues, but we all acknowledge that the economy and four basic EU freedoms are the best way to give our region hope for a long-term peace, is said to be further on paper, expressing confidence that the Open Balkans “ ” will be remembered as the moment that brought our nations closer to the European Union and towards full membership in the world's largest trade bloc, just as the Qmyr and Steel Community once preceded the birth of the second European Union.

In this case Rama, Vuciq, Zaev urge the EU to support the initiative by denying it overshadows the Berlin process and the Joint Regional Market.

The open Balkans are the new regional co-operation initiative between Albania, Serbia and Northern Macedonia. The new appointment of the initiative was released on July 21st, 2021, in Skopje at the conclusion of the work of the official part of the Economic Forum.

Rama, Zaev and Vuciq under the forum signed two memorandums and an interstate agreement aimed at facilitating movement of people and goods in order to further strengthen economic co-operation.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti has said Kosovo will not become part of the Open Balkans initiative.

Kosovo's “government is the Government of a sovereign state. We represent the people of Kosovo after the elections that we have won massively, as never before, and any co-operation that is conducted is conducted in line with our interests. We do not consider Kosovo's interest, with a Serbia denying war crimes, and does not recognise independence, become together and vote there by majority”, Kurti had declared.
