Schallenberg's announcement came hours after Sebastian Kurz said he was leaving the post.
“is not my goal and it was not my intention to take over the leader of the People's Party”, Schallenberg Said on Twitter.
“I am convinced of the opinion that the two offices -- the head of the government and the party leader with the largest number of votes in Austria -- must be reunited quickly [in one person]”.
Schallenberg had taken up the post of Chancellor in October by Kurz, who resigned as the country's leader, but initially remained the party's leader amid a corruption probe on charges that he used public money to corrupt pollsters and journalists whom he denies.
Kurz said today that he would completely avoid politics, saying he planned to spend more time with his newborn son and also citing the mental burden of the ongoing investigation.
