The president of the Social Democratic League, Zoran Zaev, was elected on May 31, 2017, in the post of prime minister of Northern Macedonia after early parliamentary elections held in 2016.
He at the helm of the government was elected with votes from all Albanian political parties after LSDM in the elections was defeated by VMRO- DPMNE with close results or a difference from two MPs' mandates.
During this mandate Zaev took on important decisions, such as the one with Greece for changing the constitutional name of Northern Macedonia, which until prior to the Prespa Agreement reached 17 June 2018 was called “Republic of Macedonia”.
Despite numerous criticisms in the opinion regarding this agreement, but also negotiations later with Bulgaria on the good neighbourly agreement, also considered harmful to Macedonian national interests, Zoran Zaev wins the regular parliamentary elections, which were held in June 2020.
Even in these elections, Social Democrat Zoran Zaev's party won a slim victory and were again Albanian parties, which enabled the formation of the new government.
Zaev, following his party's defeat in the first round of local elections on 17 October, had warned the resignation if his party loses the second round, in particular in Skopje. / REL/
