The number of victims and wounded may be higher.
Local police chief Dan Thompson said a suspect had already been placed in custody following the incident in the town of Wukesa.
“at this moment, we can confirm that five people have died and over 40 have been injured”, the Police Department said on Facebook.
However, the figures may change as we get more information. Many people are self-porting to hospitals in the region”, police said.
Picture posted online showed the red car moving through the Christmas parade on November 21st afternoon.
The videos showed some citizens rushing to help injured victims while shouting and crying were heard in the background.
Thompson said it was not clear whether the incident had “connection to terrorism”.
The suspect appeared to be fleeing from another country when he ran into people in the parade, a security official known to the investigation told CBS News.
Police have shot the car in an attempt to stop it.
The city police department later said that the public schools of Weukesha would be closed Monday.
For the mayor of Wakesha, Shawn Reilly, this is a “traumatic time” for the city.
My heart is for all who have been touched by this meaningless act”, he said.
A White House official said the American president, Joe Biden, was immediately notified of the incident.
The White House is closely monitoring the situation in Vaukesha and our hearts are with all those affected by this terrible incident. We have been contacted by state and local officials to provide any support and assistance, according to the”, the official said.
Similar incidents have occurred in the past. In 2015, four people were killed and 46 injured in Stiluter, Oklahoma, after a woman drove into a crowd and in 2016, a truck was deliberately introduced to a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people.
The attack in Berlin was linked to the terrorist group Islamic State.
