They have started work since May, but so far they have received only one salary.

Vietnamese workers walk in cold sandals and say they are hungry, have no heat, money, or help from local authorities.

Van Three, Vietnamese workers, says they have big problems.

“We have no electricity, no water or before”, he said.

factory owners “Shandong Linglong Tyre” is accused of environmental pollution and of keeping workers in inhumane conditions.

Non-government organisations say workers were receiving passports and IDs from Chinese employers. Danilo Quiriqi from the A11 Initiative says these workers stay in smaller rooms than the minimum prison space.

There's no ventilation in the room, there's no natural light, the floor's just in concrete, the walls are bare, the isolation is bad, the roof is in such a condition that we're actually waiting for when it's going to rain and snow inside. Electricity is so weak that they can only turn on lights and fill in phones. There is no kitchen for people to eat standing or in chairs. No laundry, they wash their clothes. There are no sanitation conditions in containers used for toilets and showers, so there is no way they can maintain minimum hygiene. Conditions are so bad that people lay traps around the factory to hunt little animals, which they then prepare for food”, he said.

The Chinese company has dismissed the accusations, saying workers are employed by contractors in Vietnam. / REL
