China and the US announced a surprise plan to work together on lowering greenhouse gas emissions in the next decade, in a strong push for the Cop26 summit, which is being held in Glasgou. This comes in a week when the two world superpowers exchanged insults against each other.
The world's two biggest issuers had exchanged insults for the first week of the conference, but on Wednesday evening they discovered a joint declaration that would see the world's two largest economies co-operating closely for emissions reductions. Scientists say it would be needed in the next 10 years to stay within the target of 1.5C.
The extraordinary return came as a surprise to United Kingdom hosts and will send a strong signal to over 190 other countries in the talks. China and the U.S. will work together in some specific key areas, such as lowering the methane a powerful greenhouse gas and emissions from transport, energy and industry.
The two sides agree that there is a gap between the current efforts and the goals of the Paris Agreement, so we will strengthen together our efforts and co-operation in Paris to accelerate a green and low carbon transition,” said Xie Zahenhua, head of the China delegation. “Climate change is becoming an increasingly urgent challenge. We hope that this joint statement will help to achieve success at Cop26”, Report Express broadcast.
John Kerry said: “The two largest economies in the world have agreed to work together for emissions in this crucial decade.
This is a guide for our countries and future co-operation. China and the United States have no lack of differences. But cooperation is the only way to accomplish it. This is about science, physics. ”
He said during the conference: “This statement is a step on which we can build to close the gap [between the reductions of emissions defined so far and necessary]. Every step matters. We have a long way ahead. ”
Kerry compared co-operation with China to US agreements on reducing nuclear weapons arsenals in the Cold War. “
