U.S. Senate Foreign Affairs Commission Chairman Bob Mendez, along with seven other senators, has sent letters to President Joe Biden seeking greater clarity and transparency regarding the criteria that have been used to invite states to the Summit for Democracy that will be held a month later.
The letter senators have sent to President Beden says which states are being invited sends powerful signals on values and practices that the US believes constitute democracy.
This letter bears the signatures of Robert Menedez, Tim Caine, Brian Schaz, Ron Sayden, Benjamin L. Cardin, Sheldon Ferret, Jeffrey A. Merkley and Cherrod Brea.
“First we seek more clarity and transparency regarding the criteria for selection of governments that are invited to participate in Sam. Who we invite sends a powerful signal regarding the values and practices that we believe constitute democracy. While democracy takes many forms and some states are in trouble to consolidate democratic institutions and practices, we must be clear why we have invited each participating government. Please send us a list of the invited states and criteria that are used to determine why each has deserved the invitation”, says the senator's letter.
Otherwise, Kosovo has remained outside the list of states invited by President Biden to participate in the summit for Democracy.
Kosovo's provision was seen as the alarm bell for the state the US has its main sponsor of citizenship.
A group of nongovernmental organisations from Kosovo has requested through a letter that, the United States, consider Kosovo's call to participate in the Democracy Summit, organised on 9 December and 10 December by US President Joe Biden.
