Schmidt's secret report to the UN follows: Wind of war in Bosnia, danger is already inevitable

The International Community's chief representative in Bosnia has warned that this state is at the inevitable risk of partition, and that there is very real possibility of restoring the war. In a report to the UN that was seen by the Guardian, Christian Schmidt, the high representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, said that if Serb separatists materialise their threats to recreate their army, dividing the armed forces into two parts, then more peacekeeping forces are needed to prevent the slide towards war.

In the first report since taking office in August, Schmidt, former minister in the German government, warned that Bosnia was facing “the greatest existential threat of the post-war period”, The Guardian reports, translated Periscopi in Albanian.

Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik threatened to withdraw from state level institutions, including from the national army built with international assistance, to restore Serbian forces.

On 14 October, Dodik said he would force members of the Bosnian Army to withdraw from Republika Srpska [the Bosnian Serb half] by surrounding their barracks, and that if the West were to intervene militarily, he had “enemies” that had promised support to the Serbian charge, Serbia and Russia.

Bosnian Serb police had conducted <x0-terrorist attacks” last month on Mount Jahorina, from where Serb forces had bombed Sarajevo during the 1992 and 1995 siege.

The high representative said it was possible to have clashes between Bosniak national agencies and Bosnian Serb police. /Periscope
