The report states that Franciscan Sister Raffaella Petrini was appointed secretary general of the Vatican City's second-highest division.
Petrini, 52, will be responsible for overseeing the administration, including Vatican museums, post office and police.
Francisco, 84, has said he wants women to play a bigger role in the Roman Catholic Church.
