After hundreds of people are barred from entering Polish territory, Polish government spokesman Piotr Mueller said 3,000 to 4,000 additional immigrants are flocking near the border. “We expect that there may be an essence of this type of action on the Polish border in the near future, which will be of armed nature”, he said.
Poland and several other EU states have accused Belarus of trying to provoke a new refugee crisis in Europe in retaliation for their criticism of the brutal oppression of the opposition by Belarusn President Alexander Lukashenko. The situation has been tense since several months and deteriorated on Monday, when the Belarusian authorities led about 1,000 people towards the Polish border.
The Interior Ministry's “Forces and soldiers managed to stop the first massive attempt at violating the” border, the Poland Defence Ministry said through a post on social networks, adding that migrants have built a camp in Kuznica region and that they are constantly being guarded by the Belarusian services, writes The Guardian.
Germany called on European Union member states to take steps to tackle the deepening crisis. “polonia or Germany cannot manage this one. We have to help the Polish government secure its external border. That would actually be the European Commission's task. Now I'm calling on them to take steps”, said German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer's task officer.
