A month ago, Kosovo police intervened in northern Mitrovica with the aim of fighting smuggling and organised crime. But there, elite police units face resistance from local Serbs.
However, eight people ended up in handcuffs under suspicion of smuggling with goods from Serbia to Kosovo and vice versa.
And when 30 days of action has passed, the trial of those arrested is continuing in Pristina.
Charged for criminal work “The participation or organisation of the Organised Criminal Group” and “smuggling with Mallra”, most of those arrested were asked to change the detention measure to house arrest.
However, according to the document provided by T7, for two suspects, the Special Prosecutor has already applied for continuing the detention measure.
And in his request for continued detention, the prosecutor of the case has stressed that suspects have been quietly protected.
Such a thing, the lawyer of one of the accused, Durim Osmani, describes him as scandalous.
Osmani warns that he will send the case to the ombudsman after his client has been violated the right guaranteed by the Constitution to defend in silence.
The silent protection should not be among the reasons for continuing the detention measure, and the Council for Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms also says.
T7 television has also sent questions to the Special Prosecutor's address on this issue, but the same haven't returned.
