Swedish Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson has been elected the new Social Democrat Party chairman, paving the way for her to become the country's first female prime minister.
The economy and 54-year-old who was the only candidate was elected unanimously at the party congress in Goteborg.
Its choice in this position comes five months after SAP Prime Minister Stefan Lofven resigned after losing a vote of confidence in parliament. He later announced that he would withdraw as leader of the SAP party in November.
She is expected to become the first female prime minister in Swedish history, provided she gets a vote in Parliament, whose date has not yet been set.
I've agreed to become president, because I know I can do my best for Sweden. And because I know we are the Social Democrats who have solutions to the problems Sweden faces”, Andersson said in a statement.
The SAP is the largest political formation in Sweden with 100 out of 349 seats in parliament, but the country's second largest party, liberal-conservative moders hope to govern after they have approached the right-wing populist Democrats.
