The decision on this change was made by President Emmanuel Macron in July 2020 and provoked debate in Elyse.
According to Europe 1, Macron has demanded the return of dark blue to the flag, used during the First Republic in 1793, while local media stress the influence of Admiral Bernard Rogel, taking into account the fact that the French Navy uses this tone of blue in its ships.

One of the reasons given for this change is the aesthetic. However, there are many who insist that change should not be interpreted as a gesture against The EU.
This was after blue had changed into a more light blue under the presidency of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, which wanted to bring it to the blue color of the European Union flag.
According to Europe 1, no communication has been made about this change to suggest that the president wanted to radically change the symbols of the Republic.
