The European Union's envoy for dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, said on November 25th that there is room for progress within the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, until he stressed the strategic importance of this process for the entire European Union.
He said that during the visit to Kosovo, he has discussed a possible meeting between Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, whom the EU hopes will be held before the end of the year.
After meeting with Prime Minister Kurti, Lajcak said it is not only important that the meeting be established, but the result could be.
It's not about meeting, because leaders have met twice, but as you know there hasn't been any positive results. This time, our ambitions are different and it is not only about organising the meeting, but also about proving what the results will be, Lajcak said.
He added that the parties have expressed good will for the dialogue process and “we just need to make sure that the meeting produces results”.
Lajcak has been on a one-day visit to Pristina with whom he met with Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani.
During the meeting with Osman, Lajcak said he needs EU activism in increasing the credibility of the enlargement process and confirming the European future for Kosovo and the Western Balkans.
On the other hand, President Osmani said Kosovo remains a committed and constructive party in dialogue with Serbia. According to her, the success of this process is not only important for Kosovo, but also for the region.
However, according to Osmani, the dialogue epilogue should be mutual recognition between Kosovo and Serbia, the Kosovo presidency's announcement said.
Regarding the possibility of reaching an agreement with Serbia in an interview for Radio Free Europe, days ago Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said it is expected that the final agreement will be reached during his mandate.
Talks on normalising relations between Kosovo and Serbia have started since 2011. A number of agreements have been reached since then, but most of them have not been implemented in practice.
Dialogue was interrupted several times for various reasons. But, recently the obstacle in dialogue was made, the agreement to establish the Association of Major Serb municipalities in Kosovo.
The aim of the dialogue is said to be to reach a comprehensive and legally binding agreement for both sides.
