The rise in electricity prices has also caused significant increases in the value of energy import. KEDS and KESCO during October this year -- that is, for a month, in spite of good weather -- imported 9.15m euros of electricity -- an energy surge of 1.5m euros in the same period last year.
The increase has stemmed from extreme prices and increased demand. KEDS and KESCO have bought electricity at the average price of 242 euros per megawatt/hour during October of 2020, an increase of nearly fivefold from October 2020, when electricity was imported at the average price of 49 euros per megat/hour. Consumers have increased by 18 percent compared with the same period last year.
Due to increased consumption KEDS and KESCO, it has been forced to import electricity hours during October 37,753 megawatts. The trend of consumer growth has continued during November, as well as higher prices, even those of October.
The drop in temperatures is expected to increase consumption, and therefore the need for additional imports, as local production is limited. Thus, it is estimated to have astronomical and affordable costs not only for KEDS and KESCO but for all Kosovo citizens.
Thus, maximum savings and alternative forms of heating are essential throughout the country.
