Four others, among them a man whose condition is described as grave, were injured in the incident, which occurred Sunday morning near the entrance of the Black Gate to the Al Aksa mosque complex, also known as the Temple Mountain.
The alleged attacker, who used an improvised automatic weapon commonly known as Carlo, says police, was shot dead by police officers at the scene, writes CNN.
Israel's Public Security Minister Omar Bar Lev said that the armed person was from the Shuafat neighborhood in eastern Jerusalem and a member of Hamas' political arm.
Hamas issued a statement identifying the assailant as Fadi Abu Shkaydam, calling him a heroic martyr and describing him as a local leader of the movement.
He said the attack was an answer to efforts to desecrate Al Aksa mosque.
Israeli Prime Minister Naphtali Bennett told the government ministers that he was praying for the recovery of the wounded and had instructed security forces to prepare for “copying attacks”.
The incident comes four days after a 16-year-old Palestinian was shot dead after committing a knife attack on two Israeli border police officers in the Old Town, police said.
