The German authority said the gas pipeline operating company should be in line with German laws before the 10-billion project can be adopted, the BBC writes.
Germany's decision took the price of gas to Britain and the rest of Europe to the highest level in the past three weeks. Critics fear that the new pipeline will increase Europe's dependence on Russia in the field of energy.
Layn under the Batic Sea bed, the new pipeline would double the export of Russian gas to Germany and would also bypass Ukraine, which benefits large numbers from existing gas pipelines extending through its territory.
German businesses have invested a lot in the 1,225km-long pipeline, and former cascellari Gerhard Schröder has played a major role in the development of this project.
It is expected that the decision to suspend approval will delay the project for even several months, and even when the project is granted approval from Germany, it will then need green light from the European Commission.
