In a joint statement, MEPs condemned authorities in Serbia and President Aleksandar Vuciq, saying it is unacceptable that police defend the mal of a war crimes convict in the country that is a candidate for EU membership. The statement has been signed by nine eurodeputs and, as Dr.N1info writes, citing nova.rs, the document has also been offered to rapporteurs for Serbia at the European Parliament, Vladimir Bilchik, but has refused to sign.
The statement said that the Mural of Ratko Mladic, a Bosnian Serb general convicted of war crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the genocide in Srebrenica before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and others like him, were found throughout Serbia.
“One of Mladic's murals, which was painted several months ago in downtown Belgrade, has had to be removed, but Serbian police yesterday have prevented this. “While a group of human rights activists, led by the Youth Initiative for Human Rights in Serbia, announced its removal for November 9th, International Day against Fascism and Anti-Semitism, but Serbia's Interior Ministry banned the body”, the statement said.
According to Serbian media sources, this document has also been offered to eurodeputt Vladimir Bilchik, but he has refused to sign it.
The statement reportedly that Serb activists, despite police ban, have gathered to protest the wall, which has been protected by police, bringing escalation of conflict and the arrest of two activists.
“The protection of the mural is another example of what the Government of Serbia thinks and President Vuciq for reconciliation, rule of law, democracy and regional co-operation. Once again, Serbian authorities and top Serbian political officials have openly shown they do not respect international justice and its decisions, as well as the victims of Yugoslav wars. It is totally unacceptable for an EU candidate country to decide police to defend a wall of convicted war criminal who is directly responsible for the crimes and mass killings in and around Srebrenica in July 1995, thus contributing directly to the victim's re-traumatisation. We call on Serbian authorities to prevent the denial of genocide in Srebrenica and the legalisation of convicted war criminals because it is contrary to all European and universal human rights values. Citizens of Serbia deserve to live in a country whose government respects victims and human rights, rather than in a country that protects the mural paintings of war criminals,” were quoted as declaring the Eurodeputs.
