EU chief: Union membership can only be done through reforms in rule of law

The chief of the European Union Office (BE), Thomas Szunyog, said the goal of the annual union report for Kosovo is to offer recommendations to institutions for advancing reforms that would draw close to the EU. According to him, the EU Report on Kosovo is one of the most important documents.

Those comments he made at the table on the “EU Kosovo report 2021”, organised by the institute EPIC in collaboration with the Commission for European Integration and with GIZ support.

Szunkov added that there is no quick road towards the EU and that reforms in rule of law and fighting organised crime and corruption are necessary.

The enlargement package has been adopted with details about the current situation for the Western Balkans, the package is made up of communication for policies including the Kosovo report. The report is the result of a fair assessment. The report has praised the progress achieved in several areas, and it is clear that there are no fast ways towards the EU, reforms must be implemented to bring results like rule of law, recovery of the economy and implementation of the SAA.

The elections in 2021 have been well-managed, Kosovo has not made progress in meeting recommendations for public administration and we need a powerful leadership. We have seen progress in the judicial system, the adoption of the action plan, and it is continued beyond the reporting period, we have had progress in the electronic system, we have noted with concern the intervention in re-evaluation of judges called self-esteem, and that can only be considered an extraordinary measure, should be in accordance with EU standards, Kosovo has had progress on human rights”.

He said the EU will continue to support Kosovo, where there is commitment to progress, the EO reports.

“Raport offers a consensus on where Kosovo stands, the EU will continue to support Kosovo where there is commitment to make progress”.

“Civil society in this process is decision-making to underline immediate recommendations. These results we will present are excellent grounds for reflection and on the road to EU reform”, Szunkov said during the discussion.

And Jan-Axel Voss, in charge of work at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, has said that this state has always supported Kosovo towards the EU, but that the report has specific points to be implemented.

The German has supported Kosovo towards the EU in succession. This project is designed to see where Kosovo stands on the road to the EU”.

The EU Commission has published the progress report, and this report is detailed. There were so many messages on the EU road”, he said. / EO
