According to court documents, Coronel was found guilty earlier this year of helping her husband's cartel, the Sinaloa cartel, in the process of distributing drugs while her husband was in prison.
The defendant has acted mainly in support of her husband. The defendant has acted according to his orders, which, in turn, has advanced the interests of the criminal cartel. The defendant was not an organizer, leader, chief or any other kind of manager, rather, she was a toothbone on a very large wheel of a criminal organisation”.
Because Coronel, there is no previous criminal sentence, she could avoid a minimum 10-year sentence for her crimes.
The three-year sentence is one less than the federal government's four-year recommendation, which defence called inappropriate “” during Tuesday's sentencing session.
