Speaking to the BBC on November 20th, WHO regional director Hans Kluj warned that about 500,000 deaths could be recorded by March, unless urgent action is taken.
His warning followed Czechia and Slovakia's reports of record numbers of new cases with COVID-19. Other European countries have also reported worsening the situation with pandemic.
Kluj said they are in number of factors that have impacted this including insufficient vaccination, winter season and regional dominance of the highly transmitted Delta variant.
Earlier this week, Austria has announced a national stalemate starting on November 22nd, while countries like the Czech Republic and Slovakia have said they are setting new restrictions on people who are not vaccinated.
Last week the Netherlands imposed a partial three-week impasse to prevent the spread of COVID-19, as growth of new coronary cases has been noted over the past period.
