The province of Upper Austria will impose restrictions Monday if it receives approval from the federal government. Salzburg also plans new measures.
Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said the national isolation for the unexcused is “possibly inevitable”.
Two-thirds of people should not suffer because others are reluctant to be vaccinated, he said.
The upper Austria, which borders Germany and the Czech Republic and has a population of 1.5 million, has the highest level of coronary infection and the lowest rate of vaccine.
In total, Austria recorded on Thursday 11,975 new cases of the infected and the Commission for Coronavirus of this country warned of a threat that, as it said, “should be taken seriously”.
Austria has already banned the unexcused from going to restaurants, cinemas, skiing centres and wigs, but measures are expected to become even more difficult in Upper Austria.
The Chancellor said isolation for the unexcused means they will not be allowed out of the house, except for necessary reasons, such as going to work or buying food.
