Pope Francis has considered sexual abuse in France as a moment of shame, where, according to an investigative commission of some 21,000 children and young people had been victims of sexual violence since the 1950s.
Along with the church-led institutions, there may have been 330,000 victims. This is a considerable number. I told my grief and pain to the victims about the trauma they suffered. This is a shame to me, the shame of all of us, my shame”, Papa Francisescu said in a general audience, at the Vatican.
Francisco called on bishops and church leaders in France to do everything possible to ensure that such incidents do not occur again and “so that the Church can become a safe home for all”.
The French Bishops' Conference reaffirmed today that there must be financial compensation for the victims.
