The largest opposition party in the country, through a communique for the media, has indicated that in recent months, the whole of Europe is experiencing tremendous increases in electricity prices, while according to the PDK, Kosovo's government is showing neglect and has not taken any measures to address this rapidly approaching crisis even Kosovo.
Currently, the price of electricity in the energy exchanges in our region has reached three times the price of one year ago, while we are still away from winter when it is expected to reach the price peak.
This international crisis threatens the regular supply and affordable prices of citizens and businesses, thus jeopardising economic stability, the welfare of citizens and the national security itself”, the communique says.
It is known that Kosovo has no power generation capacity to meet its needs when it reaches the winter consumption point and therefore is dependent on neighbouring countries both for energy purchase and for transmission of imported energy.
“Therefore, it would have to have Government planning months ago for the winter, earlier obtaining contracts for energy purchase in that period when prices in energy exchanges were still low.
Unlike the Government of Kosovo, governments of many countries have long been put in motion and are taking steps to cope with the serious consequences of reducing energy resources and unprecedented growth in a short time of price”, the communique says.
According to the PDK communiqué, unless quick measures are taken by the government, this situation risks seriously damaging Kosovo businesses that have not yet recovered from the pandemic crisis. It also affects the well - being of families who spend much of their money on heating during winter.
“Well, the Government of Kosovo has not only shown unable and irresponsible to advance addressing the difficult winter energy situation, but has also taken harmful action in the field of energy. The failure of the New Kosovo thermal power plant construction project and the deadlock of the gas pipeline and thermal power plant infrastructure project meet Kosovo's interest in gaining energy independence and boosting the diversification of its energy production resources. Furthermore, news of blocking strategic investments in renewable energy is revolting, said the communique.
So, The PDK calls on the Government of Kosovo to be responsible and immediately committed to secure contracts for purchase and transmission of energy at the most reasonable price for the coming months in order to ensure the safety of sufficient supply in the coming months.
According to the media communiqué, Kosovo's government must be fully engaged also to maintain the current, reduce waste and waste of electricity, as well as increase hydrocarbon reserves in the country.
The PDK, too, finds it necessary to review the power price subsidisation needed for businesses that keep our economy standing, as well as for the marginalised class of society that may have the impossible to cover current costs in winter.
