Osman in Portugal says corruption in Kosovo belongs to the past

The country's president, Vjosa Osmani, has declared that corruption in Kosovo belongs to the past. Osmani in an interview for “DN” in Portugal estimates that newly elected institutions in the country are working actively on the anti-corruption platform.

“Absolutely. I can say that corruption belongs to the past, because it is very important to say that the newly elected institutions are actively working on the anti-corruption platform”.

Osmani has also talked about reforms in justice, saying efforts to do so have not been made just because the EU urged.

The first major reform of new institutions is in the judicial system, because we believe without rule of law we cannot succeed in any other area, whether the economy, integration, youth investments, gender equality. All this is related to having a strong judicial system capable of ensuring security and equality for all. This is our priority because it is directly related to our success in all other fields”.

And our efforts for justice reform are not only made because the EU requires it, but above all because it is what we believe is best for citizens. We are working together with the EU and it is clear that we need the support of several member states, especially for access to financial instruments to ensure that the mechanisms we are building are successful. At the same time, we also need political and moral support because this is not an easy battle”, Osmani said.

Regarding fighting corruption, on the other hand, the recently released European Commission Report has stressed that limited progress has been noted.

Kosovo has made limited progress in fighting corruption and organised crime, but efforts for more active investigations must be stepped up, final judicial decisions and final seizure of illegal assets”, the EC report said.
