Macron referred to problems between Kosovo and Serbia, but also to clashes between northern Macedonia and Bulgaria.
We had a very good discussion for the Balkans today and the prospect of integration. The situation today is very complicated among many European countries. The situation between Serbia and Kosovo, the dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade looks very complex. We've had a few moments with the leadership of the countries and the Chancellor. We have also discussed the situation between northern Macedonia and Bulgaria today, as you know. We have to progress on this topic, but our goal is to be able to re-give a Balkan perspective that is all in Europe”, the French president said.
According to Macron, the Balkans today are facing a certain setback behind history and major tensions”, Euronews Albania reports.
“We must respond with political commitment and more attention to enable greater trade and human integration in the region and have a policy for a common approach to dealing with minorities that are a topic that belongs to the entire region”, he said.
In conclusion, the French president also spoke of important EU issues across the Balkans, stressing the need for co-operation with Russia and Turkey.
Listen, I think the EU has two main challenges, there are many more, but they are institutional. We must first expand our border and have a discussion with our neighbours, in particular with Russia and Turkey, and at the same time we must deeply transform our internal functioning”, Macron concluded.
